Thank you for visiting. I am Dr. Amarjot Surdhar, a psychiatrist double board-certified in General and Addiction Psychiatry, with more than 15 years of clinical experience. My hope is that my office feels like a calm, private place where you can speak openly, feel understood, and build a plan that fits your life.

My path into psychiatry began with a mentor, a thoughtful psychoanalyst, who taught me to listen not only to symptoms but to what often goes unspoken. Years of caring for people in outpatient clinics and psychiatric emergency settings have shown me that every symptom sits within a whole life, a family, and a story. I try to bring that understanding to every visit.

Who I am glad to care for

I care for adults navigating anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, stress and burnout, and substance use, including alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines. Many of the people I see are busy professionals, physicians, parents, and creatives who want to feel like themselves again. You do not need to have everything figured out to begin. A first conversation is a wonderful place to start.

How I work

  • I listen first, and I move at your pace
  • Together we set goals that matter to you, using Motivational Interviewing
  • I use the lowest effective amount of medication, and only when it is right for you
  • Therapy, medication, or both are offered according to what will help you most
  • With your permission, I coordinate with your primary care doctor, therapist, or other clinicians

Experience with buprenorphine, methadone, and testing

I have extensive experience caring for people who are considering or using buprenorphine (including Suboxone and the long-acting injection Sublocade) and helping people weigh their options for methadone. I also offer supportive testing when it is helpful, including urine and oral swab drug testing, DNA-based pharmacogenomic testing, and online cognitive assessments. All of it is designed to support your goals and never to judge.

Getting started

I meet with patients at 315 Madison Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, near Grand Central Terminal, and by secure video for patients located in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, or California. Clarion Psychiatry offers private, concierge-style care and provides a superbill for possible out-of-network reimbursement, while Prism Psychiatric Services offers insurance-based care. I would be glad to help you choose whichever suits you best.

Whenever you are ready, please reach out. I look forward to meeting you.
