Dr. Surdhar is a Psychiatrist Licensed in NY and is double board-certified in General as well as Addiction Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He holds the position of physician in Incharge (Medical Director) for the DAEHRS clinic which is a co-occurring disorders clinic for the Zucker Hillside Hospital where he sees most of the patients in the clinic. He also sees patients in the Zucker Hillside Hospital’s Faculty Practice Division as his private cases. He has extensive experience in helping people suffering from both addictions as well as with psychological issues. He routinely helps people suffering from dependence on alcohol, opiates, Benzodiazepine medications, and other behaviors and substances that are habit-forming. Patients usually also have anxiety, depression, Bipolar disorder, and other psychological problems they are struggling with and he can help people with any stage of their recovery. His approach is nonjudgemental, compassionate, and supportive. Using Motivational Interviewing, he uses the minimum effective medications necessary for treatment.
Dr. Surdhar has extensive experience working in the outpatient clinic, Psychiatric emergency rooms, detox as well as rehab and has to expertise in handling situations in all these complex settings. He provides consultation to the general Psychiatrists on handling Substance use-related issues and helps patients to link with different services.
Dr. Surdhar is experienced in handling cases involving opiate overuse and overdoses. He routinely starts patients on Suboxone/Buprenorphine and gives maintenance medications. He has successfully taken patients off the medications after stabilizing them. Other routinely handled cases include alcohol use, cannabis use, and Benzo use disorder. Dr. Surdhar is an Assistant Professor at the Hofstra University School of Medicine with the Department of Psychiatry and teaches the Residents in Psychiatry at the Zucker Hillside Hospital. He is also on the faculty at the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program at Zucker Hillside Hospital where he supervises psychiatrists receiving training on treating addictive disorders.
